The Opportunity

The Water Research Laboratory (WRL) at UNSW Sydney is offering a newly created opportunity for a Research Manager to lead the establishment and operations of the National Coastal Imaging and Fixed Lidar Station Network, a key component of the Coastal Research Infrastructure (CoastRI) initiative under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). Embedded within WRL, this role involves developing coastal monitoring programs utilising fixed video cameras and Lidar technology across a diverse range of Australian coastal sites, engaging with new and existing stakeholders and partner organisations, and coordinating with key external organisations, including other NCRIS facilities. The successful candidate will also provide strategic operational and administrative support to the CoastRI leadership team, contributing to a nationally significant effort to advance coastal science and resilience.

This role reports to A/Prof Mitchell Harley and Prof. Ian Turner, supporting Prof. Nasser Khalili of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level 8 - $127,351 to $143,489 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed term – January 2026 start until December 2028
  • Location: Manly Vale – Sydney, Australia
  • On-site role with some travel required
  • Holding a valid Australian driver’s licence is desirable

Skills and Experience

  • Degree with substantial extension of the theories and principles normally requiring extensive relevant graduate experience and a range of management experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced. Proven ability to influence senior management and stakeholders as appropriate to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Extensive experience working with a range of computer hardware and software systems and applications, including camera and/or other environmental monitoring systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of coastal processes and coastal measurement techniques.
  • Sound influencing and consultation skills and proven ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Ability and willingness to travel independently throughout Australia for several days at a time
  • Hold or ability to obtain an unrestricted Australian drivers license.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
