UNSW IT is part of UNSW’s Division of Operations and provides high quality, sustainable, flexible products and state of the art services to UNSW. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data solutions on UNSW’s data platform. The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for building, implementing, and supporting data solutions and integration components using data technology components. This role combines expertise in data engineering, data modeling, Master Data Management (MDM), and DevOps practices to ensure efficient data pipelines, reliable deployments, and optimal performance of data systems. The position reports to the Lead Solution Architect - MDM and Data and has no direct reports.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Lead the development, configuration and implementation of MDM, canonical data models, data persistence layers, data ingestion components, and components integrated into business applications.
- Lead the continuous improvement and scale of MDM, central data models, data persistence layers, data ingestion components, and components integrated into business applications.
- Provide expert technical and engineering support of MDM, central data models, data persistence layers, data ingestion components, and components integrated into business applications.
- Enhance the UNSW IT standard integration platform based on the Microsoft technology stack through collaboration with wider colleagues (including but not limited to Architects, Engineers) and aligned with industry trends and best practise.
- Analyse specific requirements and architectures to design appropriate objects and methods for implementing functional and non-functional requirements.
- Guide developers, vendor SI and coordinate with internal organisational units and suppliers during implementation to ensure deliverables are met.
- Organise infrastructure or data/integration platform changes to integrate applications into the technology landscape.
- Design and implement relational database schemas, build data ingestion, transformation, and harmonization pipelines in the Microsoft Azure Platform, and develop SQL queries for data collection from relational databases and data sources.
- Proactively manage complex risks, issues, and financials and work with the team to find appropriate solutions.
- Support leadership in optimising the Application Integration & Data Services work, including practices, organisation, and resourcing for continuous improvement.
- Oversee effective communications with key stakeholders, internal and external, and provide influential input to achieve business outcomes.
Who you are:
- Tertiary qualifications in IT or a related discipline, with 7+ years of experience in software development using Cloud architectures and middleware components.
- Extensive experience in enterprise master data management platforms, data engineering technologies, data modelling, integration, and data design practice, including SQL queries and database schemas.
- Hands-on experience with Informatica Cloud MDM / Customer 360 / Product 360 with expertise in match & merge rules, survivorship logic, hierarchies, workflows, and Golden Record creation. Informatica experience would be essential as this is our key platform.
- Proficiency in designing and implementing solutions using Azure data services (MS SQL, Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Bricks, Azure Data Lake, Azure Storage Accounts, Azure Service Bus).
- Experience with a diverse array of synchronous and asynchronous integration patterns (e.g., API, ESB, ETL) in appropriate settings.
- Strong skills in ETL/ELT tools (Informatica PowerCenter, IDMC, Azure Data Factory)
- Extensive experience with the development of data solutions to support API integrations. • Strong understanding of application, data, and API security and privacy controls.
- Experience with Azure DevOps and CI/CD tools for automated testing and deployment of data related solutions and database schema changes.
- Knowledge of system integration methods, products, tools, development life cycle, and their impact on integrated solutions.
- Knowledge of technical products like Terraform, Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, Databricks, Artifactory, and productivity applications like Git, Jira, and Confluence is preferred.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills, ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Familiarity with Agile Project Management methodologies and experience in participating in storyboarding, estimation, and using project management tools.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
