Working within the Education Innovation and Partnerships (EIP) team in the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education (PVCE) Portfolio, this role spearheads the design, development, and integration of cutting-edge AI tools and services to transform learning and teaching experiences. With a strong focus on improving educational processes, enhancing learner support, streamlining academic workloads, and enriching the student experience, the Senior AI Technologist ensures all solutions are scalable, secure, and grounded in sound pedagogical practice.

This position is responsible for delivering complete AI solutions—from concept and prototype through to implementation, integration, stakeholder engagement, training, and post-deployment evaluation. Collaboration is central to the role, involving close partnerships with learning designers, educational media specialists, data scientists, developers, and both academic and professional staff to deliver ethical, inclusive, and high-impact AI innovations that align with institutional goals. Key areas of technology include generative AI, natural language processing, intelligent tutoring systems, learning analytics, AI-driven assessment, recommender systems, and autonomous support agents.

The Senior AI Technologist also contributes to the ongoing review and implementation of the UNSW AI Action Plan, ensuring that UNSW remains at the forefront of responsible and effective AI use in education. Reporting to the Lead, Education Innovation, this position may oversee a small team of up to three direct reports.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:  

  • Explore and evaluate new AI methodologies (e.g., LLMs, NLP, predictive models, adaptive learning systems) relevant to education.
  • Prototype proof-of-concept AI applications aligned with education innovation projects that meet Faculty and institutional needs.
  • Work closely with UNSW IT and external vendors to ensure solutions align with security, governance, and infrastructure requirements and meet institutional standards for accessibility, and ethical use, including bias mitigation and data privacy safeguards.
  • Provide expert advice and consultation to senior leaders, academic staff, working groups and project teams on AI capability, readiness, and ethical deployment in educational contexts, aligned with the priorities included in the AI Action Plan.

About You:  

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) in Education, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or related field with substantial experience in the use of AI applications.
  • Demonstrated success in applying AI techniques (e.g. NLP, machine learning, generative AI, deep learning, classification/prediction models) in a relevant setting.
  • Demonstrated experience working with AI/ML frameworks • Demonstrated experience integrating AI systems with enterprise platforms.
  • Excellent project management, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills across multidisciplinary teams
  • Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into accessible insights for a non-technical audience.
  • Experience designing or deploying AI tools (eg. AI agents) in the higher education or ed-tech context is desirable.
  • Familiarity with UNSW learning environments and educational technologies is desirable.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
