This position plays an important role within the Identity and Access Management (IAM) team in the IT Cyber department. The person in this role will provide technical services within an operational team to manage a modern IAM framework - a set of business processes, policies, governance, and supporting technologies that enable appropriate and timely creation, maintenance, and use of digital identities. The Specialist – IAM Engineer will provide technical services, guidance, and stewardship in accordance with the scope of work identified, agreed, and signed off by the IAM Cloud Services Manager. The role reports to IAM Cloud Services Manager and has no direct reports.
Accountabilities:
- Define, document and review the designs, configuration/development of Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions, from conceptual, logical, and physical design to meet business and technical requirements, leveraging architecture patterns and following development processes.
- Manage and support the Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) Platform, including daily checks, maintenance, and reporting, upgrades, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Manage new application onboardings to the Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) Platform, including authorisation of roles/groups and associated applications/systems/services.
- Manage new application onboardings to Privileged Access Management (PAM) for facilitation or vaulting of privileged access, including the adoption of the principles of least privilege.
- Manage new application onboardings to Single Sign-On (SSO) to authenticate against Entra ID, including analysis of claims for authentication, authorisation and related governance.
- Programming/scripting (eg Powershell etc), and operational identity analytics (eg KQL or SQL) to support automation and the efficient use of Identity Management solutions.
- Resolve issues/requests/problems raised in UNSW’s Service Management system related to Identity-related tickets, including the Identity Governance & Administration (IGA), UNSW Identity Manager, Entra ID SSO, Entra ID MFA, Australian Access Federation (AAF), and Privileged Access Management (PAM).
- Manage complex risks and issues, and work with the Identity and IT application teams to ensure appropriate solutions are in place.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders to understand business needs and provide fit-of-purpose solutions. Be actively involved and have effective communications with key stakeholders, both internal and external, and provide influential input with stakeholders to achieve business outcomes.
- Develop, review and update documentation, including designs, configuration, procedures, guides, and other documentation required to support Identity Management solutions.
- Maintain current knowledge of industry and vendor products to apply to the University context and keep up to date with Cyber Security/IAM solutions used within UNSW IT.
- Be available for On-Call / After Hours support on a rotating basis, typically up to one week per month as well as weekend and After Hours work as required.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others.
- Ensure hazards and risks psychosocial and physical are identified and controlled for tasks, projects, and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.
Skills and Experience:
- Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training, and experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the day-to-day management, administration and configuration of Identity Governance and Administration (IGA), Privileged Access Management (PAM), and Single Sign-On (SSO) platforms.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Entra ID (SSO), Entra ID (MFA), and On-Premises Active Directory.
- Demonstrated proficiency in scripting, automation, operational identity analytics for Identity Management solutions.
- Experience troubleshooting IAM Solutions in a production environment. Strong creative and innovative problem-solving skills, with a willingness to take responsibility for the software design/develop all the way to Production.
- Proven understanding of Single Sign-On (SSO) protocols, including OAuth2.0, OpenID Connect (OIDC) and SAML. Knowledge of Roles Based Access Control (RBAC), and/or Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC).
- Proven understanding of key Cybersecurity concepts (Network Security, Security Operations & Administration, Incident Response & Recovery, Identity and Access Management, Vulnerability Management etc).
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills and proven capacity to exercise initiative, flexibility and to be proactive in development of robust solutions to problems.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
- Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
- High level of consultation time management skills, influencing and negotiation skills and proven ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
