Work type: Full Time
Location: Sydney, NSW
Categories: Post Doctoral Research Associate, Senior Research Associate

The Opportunity

The research group of Professor Andrea Morello has an opening for a postdoctoral Research Associate / Senior Research Associate. The group specialises in the development of quantum computing hardware based on the spin of implanted donors, integrated within silicon nanoelectronic devices. Your role will be to conduct research of theoretical nature. The research project this role will be working on is aimed at the demonstration of quantum information processing with high-spin nuclei in silicon, exploiting the high dimensionality of the Hilbert space to encode robust logical qubits. The focus of the project is on the demonstration of fault-tolerant quantum operations, quantum error correction, and scalability beyond one atom. As a theory-focussed Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in the group, you will be responsible for developing new theory for quantum information processing in high-dimensional systems and informing future directions for the experimental effort.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in theoretical quantum information processing, quantum error correction, and application to practical quantum devices.

This role will report to Scientia Professor Andrea Morello and has no direct reports.

About the Team, the School, and UNSW

UNSW is a large, research-intensive university with a diverse and talented community; a community doing extraordinary things. We are driven to be thoughtful, practical, and purposeful in all we do. If you want a career where you can thrive, be challenged and do meaningful work, you’re in the right place.

The group of Prof Andrea Morello (https://www.unsw.edu.au/research/fqt) is world-famous for its breakthrough demonstrations of quantum information processing with spins in silicon. We have established all the all the key results – high-fidelity quantum gates, exceptional coherence times, compatibility with large-scale manufacturing – that make semiconductor quantum computing possible. The group is diverse, vibrant, and supportive.

The UNSW School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications (EE&T) is one of the largest and most prestigious schools of its kind in Australia. In the last 70 years, our school has grown from a purely teaching institution to one that has made important contributions to the development of electrical engineering in Australia and globally. The School is prominent within the Faculty of Engineering, currently with approximately 1300 students and 40 academic staff, with an operating budget of around $14 million.
