The Katharina Gaus Light Microscopy Facility (KGLMF) is part of the highly successful Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) at UNSW Sydney. We support researchers in Science, Engineering, and Medicine with state-of-the-art microscopy services. Our facility is one of the largest in Australia, featuring over 40 high-end microscopes, a comprehensive histology service, and a newly established 3D culture laboratory.

Reporting to the MWAC Executive Director, Renee Whan, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day management of the facility including 13 direct reports. You’ll have advanced knowledge of advanced light microscopy techniques, experience in overseeing the operations of a cutting-edge multiuser facility and have a strong focus on developmental instrumentation and collaborative engagement with commercial suppliers. You will strategically plan for new core and innovative instrumentation in the facility that service the future needs of the research community of UNSW. This includes securing external funding and liaising with key stakeholders, partnerships, and networks. The role will contribute to the university as an academic, with a focus on collaborative research and support the objectives of MWAC as member of its management team.

About the successful applicant
At Level C (Head level), you must hold a PhD and be recognised as a leading authority in Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, or Life Sciences, with experience in managing advanced light microscopy platforms. You should have a strong research track record in light microscopy techniques, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively within a team. Additionally, you should have experience in training, teaching, and supervising in a multiuser research environment, as well as in sample preparation and data analysis. You must demonstrate the ability to develop strategic plans for light microscopy, histology, and 3D cultures, foster high-quality collaborative research, secure competitive external funding, and manage budgets and major equipment procurement. Knowledge of research ethics, integrity, compliance requirements, and UNSW health and safety policies is essential, along with a commitment to UNSW’s values and objectives.

For Level D (Director level), in addition to the qualifications for Level C, you must have high-level project management experience, strong influencing and negotiation skills, and a proven record of successful student and post-doctoral fellow supervision. You should also have experience in leading and managing academic and professional staff, including change management leadership, and demonstrated success in securing competitive external funding for research infrastructure initiatives.
