Why Your Role Matters:
The UNSW IP & Commercialisation Team within UNSW Legal supports the University with legal services to navigate all areas of IP law, facilitate research and related IP commercialisation legal matters. Your work will contribute to the team’s integral role in supporting the University’s research performance and profile in line with the objectives of the UNSW 2025 strategic plan and beyond.

Reporting to Senior Legal Counsel (IP & Commercialisation), you will be providing sound, practical legal support to assist the University facilitate research and related business development activities such as commercialisation of University IP developed from research, consultancy services and with general IP related matters. The role has particular responsibility for IP due diligence and preliminary agreements to support IP commercialisation and support for the management of the University’s trade marks.

Skills and experience summary:  

  • Tertiary qualification in law with 1-3+ years’ experience providing legal support in any two or more of the following:
    • Research and IP commercialisation;
    • Copyright;
    • Trade Marks;
    • Patents, or
    • Corporate/commercial (including an understanding of the Corporations Law to privately held companies).
  • Admission to the Supreme Court of NSW and a current practising certificate
    (or eligible for admittance in NSW).
  • Familiarity with searching and reporting on IP and other types of databases.
  • Experience reviewing, negotiating and drafting agreements will be well regarded.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, including accuracy, attention to detail and managing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders in the resolution of legal issues.
  • An ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and, within a supervision framework, the ability to work independently and with initiative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
