  • Employment Type: Part Time, 17.5 hours per week
  • Duration: Fixed Term; 1 year
  • Remuneration: $85K-$113 K (based on experience) + 17% Super + Annual Leave Loading

Why Your Role Matters:

The Post-doctoral Fellow will play a crucial role in advancing the integration of HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) data into public health and clinical applications. This position involves close collaboration with researchers, UNSW, and pathology services to enhance genomic surveillance under the H2Seq program. The Fellow will contribute to the development and instruction of innovative laboratory diagnostic techniques, focusing on the amplification, sequencing, and analysis of HIV and HCV genomes.

Responsibilities include creating training materials for diagnostic laboratories and ensuring effective knowledge transfer. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in molecular virology research, experience in PC2 containment facilities, and excellent communication skills. 

This position is within the  Immunovirology and Pathogenesis Program and reports to Scientia Professor Anthony Kelleher. 

Skills and Experience:

  • PhD in virology or molecular biology (or a related/relevant discipline) or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training, or experience.
  • Demonstrated research experience in molecular virology research, including experience in whole genome sequencing for viral pathogens, as well as sequence computing analysis.
  • Experience in diagnostic laboratory and applied research.
  • Ability to work in a team, across academic and applied pathology sites at university and diagnostic settings.
  • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

  • Vaccinations - this position is based at the Prince of Wales Hospital. In line with safety and wellbeing obligations, NSW Health requires certain categories of workers to meet vaccination requirements including Covid vaccination (or have a relevant exemption). Accordingly, UNSW must adhere to these requirements for certain staff based on the Clinical Campus.
