Why your role matters
We are seeking a Lead, International Student Compliance to play a pivotal role within the Division of Education & Student Experience portfolio. This position is responsible for leading staff and overseeing the development and implementation of the international student compliance framework in collaboration with other compliance-focused roles across UNSW.
The role involves managing various responsibilities, including student interventions in alignment with the ESOS Act and National Code, handling release requests and appeals, PRISMS reporting and compliance, providing advice on COE and sponsorship/scholarship matters, and ensuring adherence to sponsorship agreements. A key focus of the role is to ensure compliance responsibilities are clearly communicated, understood, and upheld across the university.
Working closely with colleagues in Student Life, as well as across the wider portfolio, Faculties, and Divisions, the successful candidate will foster a collaborative approach to achieving compliance objectives. Reporting to the Head of Student Life, this position also includes the management of two direct reports.
Specific accountabilities for this role include:
- Support and provide expert advice to the Head, Student Life to develop and implement strategic and operational plans for international student compliance and collaborate with relevant internal and external stakeholders, to enhance the UNSW student experience
- Develop and manage budgets and resources ensuring efficiency and effectiveness within the University financial framework.
- Provide high level strategic leadership and management related to the UNSW community regarding UNSW policies and operational implications with respect to international student compliance obligations, specifically those that relate to sponsored student agreements and the ESOS Act and the National Code 2018.
- Develop and maintain specific policies and procedures pertaining to international student compliance and review UNSW policies relevant to international students regularly.
- Use judgement and initiative to improve compliance with the ESOS framework and sponsorship agreements. This includes managing the design and schedules of UNSW reports that support ESOS framework compliance and negotiating with UNSW stakeholders to implement necessary changes to support compliance and best practice with the ESOS framework.
About You:
- Relevant tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline and extensive related experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and experience.
- Possess a sound understanding of issues and challenges facing international students of numerous diverse backgrounds and the requirements of the ESOS Act and National Code and demonstrated ability to provide expert advice on the impact on UNSW operations.
- Ability to manage complex and sensitive cases and critical incidents in an empathetic, structured and effective manner, with experience in supervising case management staff and leading debriefs.
- Significant leadership and team management skills and experience with demonstrated success in motivating, managing, coaching, and developing staff, and in fostering teamwork and to effectively diffuse potential areas of dispute and/or conflict.
- Demonstrated operational management skills and experience including strategic planning, budget management, planning, priority setting, and staff management, as well as excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
- Proven ability and record of successfully applying judgement, creativity, and flexibility to solve complex problems, including by generating new and innovative ideas and approaches
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a customer service focus and the demonstrated ability to build effective internal and external working relationships and influence, persuade, negotiate, and liaise at all levels
- Experience at a senior level in managing quality assurance and in developing, delivering and continually improving programs, processes and systems, including project management and change management processes.
