Why Your Role Matters:

A multidisciplinary postdoctoral researcher with experience in epidemiology and public health, laboratory diagnostics, community-based and complex interventions, and their implementation and scale-up in LMIC settings is required for this exciting new role. This position will be based fulltime at the PNG Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR) in Madang, Papua New Guinea.  

This Senior Research Fellow (Level C) will lead new research on implementation science within the Asia and Pacific Health Program at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney. This position will work closely with in-country partners and stakeholders to advance the co-design, evaluation, and implementation of integrated models of health care in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings in our region.

The evaluation of health service delivery models for those at greatest need, including people living in rural and remote communities, underserved and marginalized populations, and people living with HIV will be key priorities. This will include research to inform implementation and scale-up of cervical cancer elimination programs in Papua New Guinea and the Asia-Pacific; and to advance opportunities for integration of non-communicable disease control within established programs.

This position is within the Asia and Pacific Health Program and reports to Professor Andrew Vallely.

Skills and Experience:

  • A completed PhD in a relevant scientific area (e.g. Public Health, Epidemiology, Laboratory Science).
  • 10 years’ experience in conducting community and primary care-based research in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) in Asia and the Pacific.
  • A thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience in implementation science, inclusive of conducting real-world, pragmatic field trials.
  • Proven track record with high impact publications in the implementation science field and/or related disciplines (e.g. diagnostic, clinical, process and impact evaluation, health services research) as first and/or senior author including in the last 5 years.
  • Proven experience in the management of quality control and quality assurance programs in research conducted in LMIC settings (e.g. laboratory diagnostics, data management, clinical trials monitoring).
  • Evidence of high-level communication skills, ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of in country and international partners, stakeholders, and communities.
  • High level experience with the development of research protocols and Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) applications, and research grant applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, research methodologies, and build effective relationships and collaborations.
  • Demonstrated evidence of established networks, nationally, regionally and/or internationally. Statistical and data analysis skills and experience in using statistical software such as STATA and R.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
