The globally recognised Monash FODMAP team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to take a leading role in the design, development and evolution of our digital platforms, including web applications, mobile apps and integrated services used by clinicians, dietitians, researchers and patients worldwide.
This role offers a rare blend of hands‑on engineering, architectural influence and real‑world health impact, within a collaborative university research environment.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be a key technical contributor and leader responsible for delivering well‑architected, scalable and secure digital solutions that support the Monash FODMAP Members Platform and associated services.
You will work across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements discovery and solution design through to development, testing, deployment and long‑term optimisation. The role works closely with researchers, product owners, business users, external partners and University IT teams to translate complex needs into intuitive, high‑quality digital experiences.
Beyond delivery, you will help shape engineering standards and practices, influence architectural direction, and support continuous improvement across the team.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Leading the design and development of full‑stack applications, including web platforms, APIs and supporting services
- Contributing to and influencing software architecture, including microservices‑based implementations
- Building and maintaining robust backend services using Python (Django) and Node.js / Express
- Developing responsive, user‑centred frontend interfaces using React, Vue or Angular
- Designing, building and integrating RESTful APIs and third‑party systems, including Salesforce
- Supporting and enhancing mobile applications (iOS and/or Android), an advantage for the role
- Working with MySQL databases, applying strong data modelling, optimisation and performance practices
- Deploying and supporting systems in AWS cloud environments
- Contributing to platforms used in educational and e‑learning contexts, including Canvas LMS
- Working with content‑driven systems and CMS platforms such as Wagtail
- Ensuring high standards of code quality, testing, security and maintainability
- Participating in technical reviews, mentoring team members and sharing expertise
- Collaborating with stakeholders to balance user experience, research outcomes, compliance and technical sustainability
About You
You’re a senior, hands‑on engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, working across disciplines, and seeing your software have a meaningful real‑world impact.
Essential Experience
- 5+ years of full stack software development experience
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript / TypeScript, Python and SQL
- Backend development experience with Python Django and Node.js / Express
- Frontend development using HTML5, CSS3, and modern frameworks (React, Vue or Angular)
- Experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs using JSON
- Solid experience with MySQL, including database design and optimisation
- Strong working knowledge of Git and modern development workflows
- Experience delivering and supporting applications in AWS
Highly Desirable
- Experience working with educational technology or e‑learning platforms
- Hands‑on experience with Canvas LMS
- CMS experience, ideally Wagtail
- Salesforce integration experience
- Experience designing, implementing or supporting microservices architectures
- Mobile app development experience (iOS and/or Android)
