We’re seeking an experienced Category Adviser to join our Coal Procurement Partnering team, supporting some of Aurizon’s most commercially significant rollingstock categories. This role will work across Tier 1 suppliers, complex contracts and multi‑vendor environments critical to keeping our coal network operating reliably.

About the Role

As a Category Adviser, you will partner closely with Category Leads and operational stakeholders to deliver strategic procurement, sourcing and contract management outcomes. Your portfolio will span high‑value, technically complex categories, requiring strong commercial judgement, disciplined contract management and confident supplier engagement.

While Category Leads retain overall accountability for Tier 1 suppliers, this role plays a hands‑on advisory role across multiple vendors, supporting negotiations, managing contract performance and resolving commercial issues as they arise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and execution of category and sourcing strategies across rollingstock and major programs
  • Lead and support medium to high‑complexity sourcing activities, including tenders, negotiations and commercial evaluations
  • Provide contract management oversight across a portfolio of Tier 1 suppliers, including performance management, variations, claims and dispute resolution
  • Work across multiple suppliers and contracts concurrently, balancing competing priorities and operational demands
  • Partner with internal stakeholders (engineering, maintenance, operations) to manage commercial risk and value delivery
  • Track, validate and report commercial benefits and savings outcomes
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, commercial governance frameworks and internal procurement policies
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across category management and supplier engagement practices

About You

You are a commercially astute procurement professional who is comfortable operating in a complex, asset‑intensive environment. You bring strong contract management capability and are confident engaging with senior suppliers and internal stakeholders alike.

You will ideally bring:

  • Substantial experience in commercial, procurement or category management roles, preferably within a large, regulated or ASX‑listed organisation
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex contracts and supplier relationships, including Tier 1 or strategic suppliers
  • Strong negotiation, influencing and stakeholder management skills
  • The ability to manage multiple vendors and contracts simultaneously while maintaining commercial discipline
  • Well‑developed analytical and problem‑solving capability, with experience tracking benefits and performance
  • Tertiary qualifications in Business, Commerce, Supply Chain or a related field (preferred)
  • Professional accreditation (e.g. CIPS, CA, CPA or similar) is desirable
  • High proficiency in SAP (purchasing) and Microsoft Office tools

Why Join Us

  • Exposure to high‑value, strategically important categories
  • Work closely with experienced Category Leads and senior business stakeholders
  • A role with genuine influence across supplier performance and commercial outcomes
