About the role: Due to continued growth, Aurizon is seeking a Dangerous Goods Principal to join our Safety Strategy, Risk, and Improvement team. In this pivotal role, you’ll provide expert guidance on the safe storage, handling, and bulk transport of Dangerous Goods (DG) across diverse operational environments including the development and maintenance of a safety case for a major hazard facility You’ll promote risk awareness, foster a culture of learning, and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards across multiple jurisdictions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, implement, and continuously improve the Dangerous Goods framework and practices.
  • Build a comprehensive understanding of DG safety risks across all business operations.
  • Provide technical expertise and advice on DG management to operational business units.
  • Govern and assure compliance with DG legal and regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions, including heavy vehicle and rail haulage practices.
  • Coach and support operational leaders and safety partner teams in DG risk management strategies.
  • Oversee development of a major hazard facility safety case
  • Deliver in-field assurance programs to validate the design and implementation of DG controls.
  • Investigate and monitor events involving DG, including notification and management of relevant DG regulators.
  • Champion a culture of collaboration and accountability within the Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) community.

To excel in this role, you will bring:

  • Extensive practical experience in Dangerous Goods safety across multiple jurisdictions (mandatory).
  • Degree-level qualifications in Safety Management with a focus on DG (preferred).
  • Operational experience in logistics, heavy vehicle transportation, and Major Hazard Facilities (MHF)
  • Deep knowledge of DG legislation across all Australian jurisdictions.
  • Expertise in safety processes associated with DG management.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including effective engagement with regulators.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience designing processes and frameworks.
  • Proven ability to lead people through change and provide coaching and mentoring support.
  • High-level interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Project management expertise.
