Join Aurizon as a Legal Counsel!

Are you a talented legal professional looking for an exciting in-house opportunity? Aurizon is expanding, and we’re on the hunt for a Legal Counsel (2-6 years PQE) to join our high-performing Legal team. With our nationwide growth and ongoing interstate acquisitions, there's never been a better time to be part of Aurizon’s journey.

Why This Role is Unique:

As a Legal Counsel at Aurizon, you'll be at the heart of our operations, working on a diverse range of commercial and operational legal matters that impact our business nationwide. You’ll collaborate closely with other lawyers and paralegals, delivering commercially driven legal advice to support the business units which operate Australia’s largest rail freight provider.

This role will be based out of our near new head office in Fortitude Valley, close to the James Street precinct, and may be either full time or part time (0.8 FTE). We offer a hybrid model for flexible working.

What You’ll Do:

This role forms part of an experienced team which works closely with and supports Aurizon’s Coal, Bulk and Containerised Freight businesses, along with Aurizon’s Finance and Strategy team.  The role will support a broad range of legal work, including the following:

  • Commercially focussed legal support: Provide legal support on a range of commercial matters, particularly in relation to Aurizon’s revenue contracting, customer relationships, growth projects and mergers and acquisitions.
  • Operational and regulatory:  Advise and assist on Aurizon’s legal obligations arising from its day to day operations, including contract and relationship management, safety, governance and compliance.
  • Legal Strategy & Protection: Get to know Aurizon’s diverse business and assist in managing Aurizon's legal activities to protect and assert our strategic interests.
  • Legal documentation: Prepare, amend, review, negotiate and advise on a wide range of legal documents, including customer and supplier contracts, strategic relationship documents, key correspondence, regulatory submissions.
  • Disputes: Assist in the conduct and coordination of disputes and litigation as required, in conjunction with external legal advisers where necessary.
  • Continuous Improvement:  Support the development and implementation of improved business efficiencies through continuous improvement, innovation and initiatives in the delivery of the legal function and across the business in areas which legal supports.

About You:

  • Qualified Practitioner: Admitted to practise as a Legal Practitioner in the Supreme Court of Queensland with a current practising certificate.
  • With experience, but ready to grow:  You have developed your expertise in private practice for at least 2 years, and you’re ready to extend your expertise to in-house practice in a broad range of commercial and operational legal work.
  • Desirable Background: Experience in a leading law firm, relevant in-house experience, and familiarity with commercial work across Australian jurisdictions are highly regarded. Experience advising on infrastructure assets, particularly in transportation, mining, or commodities industries, is a plus.
  • Versatile & Adaptive: You have a ‘can do’ attitude and are willing to practice across a broad range of areas, including procurement, construction, safety, competition law, disputes, and litigation.
  • Excellent Communicator: Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate, and build relationships.
  • Autonomous & Commercially Savvy: Curious and interested in learning about how our business works, and keen to engage directly with our business.  Proven ability to manage matters independently from start to finish, with high commercial acumen and experience working to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
