The Opportunity

As Open Cut Examiner at Lake Vermont, you will ensure the health and safety of persons in and around the surface excavation during the mining activities in or around the surface excavation and to ensure statutory compliance. Your role will see you providing effective production and safety leadership to the project production crew ensuring that production targets are met, a safe and healthy workplace for all employees is maintained and community & environmental compliance is adhered to.

We are seeking an individual with significant demonstrated experience managing employee’s compliance to policies, standard operating procedures and legislation through observing, directing and leading by example. As Open Cut Examiner, you will consistently look to identify hazards and risks through regular inspections, audits and behavioural observations.

Additionally, you will:

• Assist the SSE in implementing the Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) to maintain compliance in accordance to all the relevant legislation and strive for beyond compliance.
• Play an active role in all incident investigations to ensure the root causes are identified and that all the required documentation is reported, if applicable, implement corrective actions in consultation with relevant parties.
• Assist in developing, reviewing and auditing the SHMS relating to the mining activities in and around the mine excavation.
• Lead, coach and develop team members by setting clear expectations, monitoring performance and mentoring team members.
• Provide clear performance expectations to personnel and subcontractors and reinforce correct behaviour through recognition and encouragement as well as application of timely disciplinary procedures.
• Liaise with Mining Supervisors and People & Capability to manage any employee relations issues, to ensure all issues relating to safety, compliance and production are dealt with promptly.
• Actively participate in the daily pre-start meeting to the production crew.
• Inspect surface mine excavation areas before the start of mining activities to ensure acceptable risk levels.
• Periodically inspect the surface mine excavation and surrounding areas during mining activities to ensure acceptable risk levels.
• Routinely audit to ensure that only qualified personnel perform tasks requiring authorisation and that equipment is used in accordance with its design parameters and correct operating techniques.

About you

You will have an Open Cut Examiners Certificate of Competency for Surface Coal Mines and proven experience working as an OCE in an open-cut mining environment.

Additionally, you will have:

• Coal Mining Industry Competencies RIIRIS301, RIICOM301B, RIIOHS301A and R11RIS402A
• Competent in MS Office
• Ability to read and interpret mine plans
• Sound knowledge of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 (QLD) including relevant regulations, guidelines and Australian standards
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to rapidly adapt to changes in operational situations
