What you’ll do
Reporting to the Manager, Autonomy, this role plays a critical part in building Thiess’ internal autonomy capability and supporting autonomy projects from mobilisation through to steady-state operations.
This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong focus on operating discipline, change management and project delivery, working closely with site teams, functional specialists and external partners to embed autonomy safely and effectively into production environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of autonomy projects to ensure initiatives are implemented on time, within budget and with minimal disruption to site production.
- Integrate autonomous hauling into daily operating rhythms, working closely with site-based stakeholders to embed new systems, processes and ways of working.
- Champion safety and functional safety compliance, ensuring autonomy systems meet legislative, governance and Thiess safety requirements.
- Provide technical coordination and oversight of OEMs, dealers and service providers to ensure a consistently high standard of operational and technical support.
- Support the development and application of operational risk assessments and autonomy governance frameworks, ensuring alignment with TGS, PGS and Levels of Authority.
- Actively support change initiatives, helping teams adapt to new technologies, operating models and autonomy-enabled workflows.
- Apply sound commercial and project discipline, supporting cost control, budget adherence and responsible day-to-day decision making.
- Drive continuous improvement and knowledge capture, maintaining awareness of autonomy developments and documenting learnings to enable scalable, repeatable deployment across Thiess operations.
What you’ll bring
You are a technically strong and collaborative engineer with a passion for innovation and operational excellence. You enjoy working in complex environments, engaging with stakeholders and translating new technology into safe, practical outcomes.
You will bring:
- Engineering degree or equivalent qualifications and experience
- 5+ years’ experience in a relevant engineering role
- Experience with autonomous system technologies (preferred)
- Systems thinking and the ability to design and integrate complex operational solutions
- Exposure to asset‑intensive environments, mine planning and/or operational technologies
- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and teamwork skills
- Commercial awareness and a continuous improvement mindset
