Job Summary
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Students for Student Support leads student support initiatives within the Dean of Students Office and plays a key role in the division's strategic planning. This position serves as the primary collaborator with Academic Affairs on policies and joint initiatives, leads behavioral interventions and threat assessments, supervises the Case Manager, supports student case management, and directs crisis response efforts. Additionally, the Assistant Dean oversees the Medical Leave of Absence Committee, manages the administration and record-keeping of all medical leave requests, and is an active member of the College’s Care Team and Student Progress Committee.
Job Duties
- 50% - Student Support - Supervise the Case Manager who leads the Care Team and support this staff member as appropriate. Serve as the lead facilitator of the Care Team when the Case Manager is unavailable. Serve as the Chairperson of the Medical Leave of Absence Committee and oversee and manage all elements of that process including appropriate record keeping Serve as the lead for OBIT (Oxy Behavioral Intervention Team) to lead campus efforts related to threat assessment. Be an active participant of the Care Team and provide overview of Student Support efforts to faculty, staff, students, and families Communicate with professors and others as appropriate when a student is unable to participate in class or other activities (work, sports, etc.) due to serious illness, injury, or hospitalization and follow up with the students return to campus or off campus care in accordance with Emmons, REHS, and Dean of Students Office. - (Essential)
- 15% - Collaborate with Academic Affairs Associate Deans and the Advising Center to address student concerns and support individual students. - Serve on the Student Progress Committee and promote and provide guidance around academic support and campus resources to students such as petitions, leave of absence, and returning to campus. Serve on related academic committees and campus initiatives. Meet with students to explore leave requests, part-time requests, petitions for special consideration and other Student Success Advisor functions. - (Essential)
- 15% - Crisis Response - Assist with immediate campus crisis response both for student issues as well as broader campus emergencies. Serve as a key member in the after-hour on-call rotation. Serve on the campus Emergency Response Team as needed - (Essential)
- 10% - Dean of Students Office Management - Assist with the overall operations of the Dean of Students Office and serve as primary point of contact for DOS issues in the Dean of Student’s Absence. Respond to student and parent concerns and complaints. - (Essential)
- 5% - Promoting Equity and Inclusion - Promote College-wide initiative of an equitable, accessible, and inclusive community building through collaboration with departmental partners, committees, and working groups. - (Essential)
- 5% - Student Affairs Leadership - Serve as a member of the Student Affairs Dean's Leadership Team within the Division of Student Affairs. Collaborate with the Vice President of Student Affairs and other leadership to prioritize strategic planning initiatives and develop assessment measures to evaluate the effectiveness of goal achievement. Contribute to Restorative Practices efforts within Student Affairs and across the broader college community. - (Essential)
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree of Higher Education Administration or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five years of leadership experience in relevant areas, such as student support and success, as well as higher education crisis response.
- Experience working with diverse student populations to promote equity and justice is also expected.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy. Strong commitment to a quality work product.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
- Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, inclusion & diversity.
- Demonstrated skill in adapting to and performing work effectively in high-volume, high accountability, confidential environment with multiple and changing priorities.

- Knowledge of contemporary leadership and management methods to ensure employee success and achievement, and demonstration of related and applicable skills as evidenced by the ability to effectively direct, assess and evaluate performance of direct reports.
- Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks, and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in assessing candidates’ experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.
- Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly.
- Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory and annual performance appraisals.
- Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral strategies, as needed.
- Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctor of Education (Ed.D) in Higher Education Administration.
- Experience in higher education with prior experience in a Dean of Students office, a leadership role within a department, institutional care teams, threat assessment/crisis response, or at a liberal arts college.
- Familiarity with the Maxient database is also desired. Knowledge of higher education governance, organizational structures, and academic policies is important.
EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:
If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
