Summary of Position: The Director of Leadership Giving and Relationships reports to the Associate Vice President for Advancement and will secure support for major gifts, planned giving, stewardship and fundraising initiatives for the University and to increase overall private support in West Michigan. Key to the success in this role will be the ability to increase Ferris’ presence in West Michigan, including Grand Rapids, and to engage key constituents in their support and partnerships with Ferris State University. This position will work closely with the Associate Vice President of Advancement in managing a leadership portfolio of donors, prospects and developing community-based initiatives and partnerships in West Michigan. This position will also serve as Associate Director, The Ferris Foundation. This position has a dual office reporting structure that includes both Grand Rapids and Big Rapids.

Required Work Experience: At least 7 years of progressively responsible and relevant fundraising experience at university or comparable non-profit organization; track record of organizing successful fundraising programs and in soliciting and closing major gifts using a well-disciplined moves management program; and inclusive, innovative and collaborative leader who thinks strategically and is results oriented. Demonstrated success in securing major gifts in higher educational setting, or comparable non-profit environment.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: Advanced degree in related field; 10 or more years of progressively responsible and relevant fundraising experience at a university or comparable non-profit organization; and a proven track record of securing leadership-level gifts and developing relationships.

 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Along with the University Advancement and Marketing Vice President, and the AVP for Advancement, develop, lead and execute the overall fundraising strategies for the University that support the institutional funding priorities and strategic goals of the University, including but not limited to: leadership and major gifts, student scholarships, capital projects, academic program support, and discretionary funds.

Assist AVP in Advancement in successfully developing and implementing changes that will draw more fully upon the philanthropic and partnership capabilities of West Michigan constituencies.

Manage a personal portfolio of leadership donors and prospects and meet established goals and objectives as determined by leadership.

Serve as a strategic partner, working in collaboration with the University’s integrated fundraising unit, for the benefit of the entire institution.

Participate in prospect management strategy meetings with the fundraising team and with university colleagues across campus, as needed, to discuss multi-interest prospects to keep activity and strategies moving.

Ensure that advancement activities are guided by industry best practices and measurement and evaluation.

Reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Advancement.
Act as Associate Director, The Ferris Foundation.
Responsible for leading The West Michigan Council and focusing on philanthropic support and engagement.

Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information. Performs all duties in compliance with applicable University policies and procedures and federal requirements.

Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.

Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.

Ability to increase the effectiveness of fundraising and relationship building through established goals, objectives and tactics to increase activity in cultivating and soliciting highly rated donors.

Strong knowledge of principles of fundraising and the ability to participate in all aspects of donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

Solid relationship-building skills and ability to interface effectively with internal and external constituents.

Able to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic advancement plans.

Able to articulate the case for support so that individuals “buy in” to the vision/mission/goals of the University and with sufficient effectiveness to secure gifts at assigned donor giving levels.

Proficient in the use of Millennium/Ellucian or similar database for recording information on all prospects and donors.

Maintain familiarity with important philanthropic issues and trends

Work well as a part of a cooperative management team.

Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
