Prepare Future Firefighters as a Fire Service Technology Instructor at CWI!

Are you an experienced fire service professional passionate about training the next generation? The College of Western Idaho (CWI) is seeking a Fire Service Technology Instructor to deliver handson, standardsbased training that prepares students for careers in firefighting and emergency response.

In this role, you’ll provide instruction aligned with NFPA 1001 and NFPA 1582 standards, helping students develop the technical skills, physical readiness, and professional mindset required to succeed in today’s fire service.

Why Join CWI?

CWI’s Fire Service Technology program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and certifications needed to enter and advance in the fire service profession. As an instructor, you’ll play a critical role in shaping jobready graduates—combining classroom learning, practical training, and physical preparation to ensure student success in both certification and realworld environments.

Instruction & Skills Training:

  • Deliver instruction that prepares students to meet NFPA 1001 and NFPA 1582 standards and certification requirements (e.g., IFSAC, FST)

  • Teach both written and handson skills required for firefighting, including equipment use, fire suppression, rescue techniques, and emergency response procedures

  • Provide instruction on topics such as:

  • SCBA use, safety procedures, and air management

  • Fireground operations, ventilation, and suppression techniques

  • Use and maintenance of firefighting tools, equipment, and apparatus

  • Search and rescue procedures, forcible entry, and ladder operations

  • Fire behavior, safety protocols, and scene management

  • Conduct student assessments through written, oral, and practical evaluations aligned with certification standards

Physical Readiness & CPAT Preparation:

  • Prepare students to meet NFPA 1582 physical fitness standards and successfully complete the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

  • Demonstrate and train aerobic conditioning, strength, and biomechanics required for firefighting tasks

  • Reinforce the importance of maintaining longterm physical and mental readiness for fire service careers

Student Development & Career Preparation:

  • Prepare students for entry into a paramilitary fire service structure, including expectations, teamwork, and workplace culture

  • Help students build problemsolving skills and adaptability to address realworld emergency scenarios

  • Promote professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement

  • Support student retention, engagement, and overall success

Program Support & Administration:

  • Record student attendance and track performance outcomes

  • Assist with registration, testing, and certification processes as needed

  • Adhere to life skills curriculum and student assessment requirements tied to state and federal programs

  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and program activities

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds

  • Ability to perform and demonstrate physically demanding firefighting tasks

  • Maintain readiness to instruct in both classroom and liveskills training environments

What We’re Looking For:

  • Five (5) years of recent, documented field experience in fire service technology

  • Proven experience and certifications aligned with NFPA 1001, NFPA 1582, IFSAC, and FST standards

  • Strong ability to teach handson, skillsbased training in a structured environment

  • Knowledge of current fire service tactics, standards, and technologies

  • Strong communication and instructional skills

  • Commitment to student success and professional development
