Position Summary:
Responsible for providing tutorial instruction for students enrolled in Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) courses, enhancing the understanding and quality level of specific course assignments, and assisting with general study skills and test taking strategies. Tutor 1’s will also be responsible for developing and facilitating customized workshops related to these math and science courses to reinforce comprehension, as well as work on projects to enhance the students’ experience with Tutoring Services.
This position also provides general customer service at the Tutoring front desk and basic tutoring support. The Tutor 1 performs a variety of routine clerical duties, responds to and resolves common inquiries and problems, and completes special projects. Tutors have opportunities for growth, including potential leadership opportunities.
There is a possibility for a hybrid schedule (remote and/or on-campus). Successful candidates are required to reside in Idaho by the first day of work for the College of Western Idaho.
Essential Functions:
• Provide educational assistance in the specific math and science courses/programs to students, which includes improving understanding and comprehension of subject matter content.
• Assist in preparation of workshops and materials to enhance program/course assignments.
• Assist in helping students track their own performance.
• Participate in scheduled training sessions.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, STEM Programs and Director, Tutoring Services.
• Provides customer service and directional assistance at Tutoring service desks, by phone, and online via chat.
• May collaborate with faculty to provide embedded tutoring support in specific, designated courses.
• Meets and communicates with students in person and via e-mail, Blackboard, and other online platforms.
• Assists in general office management.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Completion of Math 143/Equivalent (Math Tutors)
• Completion of Biology 111/Equivalent (Biology Tutors)
• Completion of Microbiology 111/Equivalent (250 - Preferred) (Microbiology Tutors)
• Completion of Chemistry 111/Equivalent (Chemistry Tutors)
• Completion of Chemistry 299/Equivalent (Organic Chemistry)
• Completion of Physics 111/Equivalent (211/212 Preferred)
• Recommendation from STEM Faculty (CWI Students)
• Must have completed a course in the subject matter with at least a “B” (unless waived by Program Instructor(s)
• Proficient in computer usage and ability to use word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs.
• Good organizational and communication skills.
• Team player within the department as well as with other departments.
• Communicate effectively in a diverse, multi-cultural community environment.
• Understand the community college philosophy of education.
• Certificate of completion or 30 college hours preferred (unless waived by Program Instructor(s).
• Recent tutoring experience preferred.
• Prior work experience in a community college environment preferred.
• Has completed a basic tutoring course (e.g. Tutor Essentials) or will complete one within one semester of hire.
