Position Summary:

The Lab Materials team provides support for science labs in biology, physics, chemistry, geology, agriculture, and horticulture. While each member of the team brings specific expertise to the team, all members support all labs, as needed. The Specialist will perform technical work in the operation and maintenance of the laboratory to ensure labs are adequately supported by participating in laboratory safety programs, maintaining laboratory schedules, preparing and standardizing reagents and solutions, maintaining chemical and equipment inventory, performing routine classroom cleaning and equipment maintenance, maintaining biological specimens and cultures, and handling biohazard and chemical waste. This position works closely with lab faculty and will mentor student employees.

Lab Materials Specialists may be assigned to support labs outside of traditional campus hours and at different locations.

Essential Functions:

• Mix pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides for application to trees, shrubs, lawns, or botanical crops
• Identify lawn or plant diseases to determine the appropriate course of treatment
• Cover areas to specified depths with pesticides, applying knowledge of weather conditions, droplet sizes, elevation-to-distance ratios, and obstructions
• Work and mentor students in greenhouse and garden bed work
• Equipment maintenance
• Prepare materials, set up, and tear down laboratories for Horticulture:
• Maintain chemical inventory
• Maintain inventory of other supplies and equipment:
• Training and Mentoring
• Ensure that laboratories are clean and safe
• Maintain grounds as needed
• Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of work experience with landscape construction, maintenance, and irrigation, or AAS in Horticulture preferred
• Current, valid driver’s license
• Knowledge of plant and tree anatomy, physiology, and growth requirements; ability to identify a variety of plant material
• Knowledge of plant diseases, insect problems, and appropriate control measures.
• Skill in landscape construction techniques
• Knowledge of irrigation systems and their components
• Knowledge and ability to apply proper pruning principles
• Knowledge and skills in using standard materials, tools, and equipment required in arboriculture and landscape trade. Ability to adapt to additional equipment as assigned.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions and practices necessary in the arbor and landscape industry
• Knowledge of preventative maintenance and minor repair of equipment.
• Idaho Professional Applicators License or ability to license upon hiring
• Ability to lift 45 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Within the lab environment, there is exposure to odorous chemicals, and the noise level is generally quiet but does vary based on activity. May be required to lift chemical containers and laboratory equipment weighing up to 45 lbs.
