The Opportunity
Join the Gunjur Laboratory as a Research Fellow (Computational Microbiome Scientist) and contribute to research investigating the relationship between the human-associated microbiome, diet and cancer outcomes. Working across prospective clinical cohorts, biospecimens, shotgun metagenomics and large public datasets, the position will work closely with the principal investigator to support a growing computational microbiome research program.
The position will develop, implement and apply bioinformatics approaches to analyse shotgun metagenomic sequencing and other -omics datasets from laboratory and clinical research studies. Key activities include establishing reproducible computational workflows, contributing to study design and data curation, undertaking statistical analyses and data integration, and generating publication-quality figures, reports and presentations. The position will also contribute to manuscript preparation, grant applications and the supervision and training of research students.
We are seeking someone with an honours degree and/or progress towards or completion of a doctorate in a relevant or closely related field. Strong analytical and manuscript preparation skills, experience analysing complex clinical or biological datasets and the ability to develop well-documented code in R, Python or another bioinformatics language are required, along with experience analysing shotgun metagenomic data. Knowledge of other -omics analysis, Unix-based systems and high-performance computing will also support success in this role, together with strong communication, organisational and collaborative skills.
