The Opportunity

The Assistant Financial Accountant plays a key role in delivering high-quality financial accounting services to the University. Supporting the integrity of the General Ledger, year-end processes and statutory reporting, this role provides technical accounting expertise, analysis and advice across the University. The position also contributes to continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen financial governance and support informed decision-making.

This position will be responsible for contributing to the University’s core financial accounting functions, including daily financial processing and University-wide month-end and year-end close activities. It will prepare month-end and year-end adjustments, undertake financial analysis for periodic and statutory reporting, and respond to internal and external audit requests. The role will assist with mandatory State and Federal Government reporting, benchmarking surveys and the preparation of consolidated annual financial statements. Maintaining the integrity of SAP will be central, through transaction review, reconciliations, variance analysis and balance sheet management, working closely with Treasury as required. The position will also support financial accounting projects, continuous improvement initiatives and build strong relationships with stakeholders to enable efficient, high-quality service delivery.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Degree in business or accounting with CA/CPA accreditation, or equivalent relevant experience
  • Strong experience using SAP or a comparable large financial system
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and relevant financial legislation
  • Excellent time management with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • Clear, confident communicator able to provide authoritative financial advice
  • High-level analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong capability across the MS Office suite
  • Proven ability to build effective, trusted relationships with diverse stakeholders
