The Opportunity

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash University is seeking a Research Fellow with strong expertise in solid mechanics modelling and machine learning to join and lead a dynamic international team of early-career researchers.

This exciting role is part of a cutting-edge project investigating the structural integrity of metallic alloys—including ferritic and austenitic steels, as well as nickel alloys—used in extreme environments.

Key Focus Areas

You will assess fatigue, fracture, and creep behaviour of components in their as-manufactured state using industry-standard non-destructive testing (e.g. ultrasonic testing). You will also develop microstructure-informed modelling to evaluate in-service performance throughout a component’s lifecycle.

What We’re Looking For

  • Expertise in meso-scale metallic materials modelling (esp. crystal plasticity)
  • Familiarity with synchrotron diffraction & high-res EBSD for collaboration with key research partners
  • Proficiency in DAMASK, AMITEX, Abaqus & MOOSE
  • Experience with MTEX & DREAM3D (advantageous)
  • Application of machine learning (e.g. Gaussian Process) for surrogate modelling & uncertainty quantification

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to an internationally recognised research program and shape the future of materials modelling and mechanical engineering. You’ll be part of a supportive, high-impact environment that values innovation, collaboration, and real-world outcomes.
