Department Head - Biomedical Engineering Blacksburg, Virginia
The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) at Virginia Tech invites applications for the position of Department Head with a start in January 2024. This senior level position within the College of Engineering will lead a department representing a unique multidisciplinary interface between biomedical science and real-world applications. Our faculty and students innovate and discover across a continuum of systems, from natural to engineered to medical. The department has 30 full-time faculty members, with an on-campus enrollment of approximately 148 undergraduates, 31 M.S., 117 Ph.D. students. The Department’s annual research expenditures exceeded $14M in FY 2024, and the School of Biomedical Engineering and Science graduate program in collaboration with Wake Forest University is ranked 36th in the nation. The NASA-funded research includes prediction of water resources and Earth surface deformation using multiple remote sensing technologies and quantification of related hazards, including water resource overdraft, land subsidence, flooding, and anthropogenic and climate droughts. The accepted candidate will apply a suite of statistical and physical models for integrating observations of different accuracies, improving predictions of water resources and/or predicting future hazards. The appointment is for one year with the possibility of an extension for a second year, depending on performance.
