We support a number of student work experience placements.

Work experience

Work Experience is the short term placement of secondary school students with employers, to provide insights into the industry and the workplace.

Students are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require extensive training or experience.

Work experience placements are for one week and the placement is for secondary school students only – there is no work experience program for people who are not students.

Structured workplace learning

Structured workplace learning is on-the-job training during which a student is expected to master a set of skills or competencies related to an accredited VET course, and undertaken as part of either VCE or VCAL.

Structured workplace learning provides students with the opportunity to integrate on-the-job experience with secondary study and is undertaken on a part time basis. There is no structured workplace learning program for people who are not students.

School-based apprenticeships or traineeships

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT) offer students the option of combining a senior secondary program with part-time employment, school and training. The program is undertaken under a Training Contract with an employer and has a training plan registered with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA). The training leads to a nationally recognised qualification and enables students to practice the skills they learn in the classroom in a real workplace scenario, to help them become more 'job ready'.

By undertaking a SBAT while completing a senior secondary certificate, a student will experience the pathway of their choice and get a jump start on their career whilst earning an income.

School-based apprenticeships can be undertaken across a range of disciplines including administration, community services, parks & gardens and information technology.

Tertiary placements

Many tertiary students are required to complete a work placement as part of their TAFE studies.

Tertiary placements can be of varying length and occur across a range of our departments. Tertiary placements provide the opportunity to apply academic learning in the workplace, and develop work readiness and key skills and attributes.

Tertiary placements are unpaid, and must be endorsed by the tertiary institute.

City employees that are required to complete a tertiary placement as part of their studies cannot complete this placement at City of Greater Geelong.
