Research Engineer II/III- Radio Frequency Engineer Burlington, MA Campus
Northeastern University is seeking a highly motivated Radio Frequency (RF) Engineer to join a rapidly growing environment for cutting edge R&D related to unmanned and autonomous systems at our Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA (ICBM). The ICBM is home to one-of-a-kind research and test facilities for conducting activities related to drone, unmanned, and autonomous system technologies. It consists of a state-of-the-art collaboration center as well as indoor and outdoor test ranges for testing aerial and ground systems as well as other devices such as antennas, sensors, and communications equipment. The lab is designed to be flexible and configurable to support current and future R&D activities related to autonomous systems in order to advance the state of the research and solve real world problems. The RF Engineer will provide domain subject matter expertise across all projects at the Expeditionary Cyber and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (ECUAS) Lab and will work within a truly unique lab environment with massive one-of-a-kind anechoic chamber. Duties will include design and test of RF-based prototype systems using software defined radios, waveform generators, and specialized test equipment such as high powered amplifiers and high speed RF data capture devices. The RF engineer will work collaboratively with other multi-disciplinary teams that are creating solutions for RF machine learning, waveform generation, EM coupling, antenna characterization, Electro-Magnetic Pulse/Electro-Magnetic Interference, and RF modeling and simulation. The focus of all work is centered on Unmanned Aircraft Systems and related technologies such as sensors and communications.

The Research Engineer II, Systems Integration (RE, SI) at the Kostas Research Institute of Northeastern University (KRI) is charged with (1) the development of our collaborative program in the creation of multi-component systems with a an AI/ML decision-making core, and (2) the evaluation and characterization of these (including the assessment of means to cyber-protect these methods from hostile observation/interference) units in diverse applications, and (3) the development of best practices for the deployment of these systems as well as the effective training of users. The RE, SI shall provide an energetic vision for the growth and development of our Neural-Net Driven (NND) program via an assessment of the current state of technology, feedback from our corporate and government partners, and an ongoing discussion with our faculty. The RE, SI shall serve as the project coordinator and portfolio developer for all of these systems and functioning as a technical coordinator for faculty and external (university, corporate, and govt) tech partners for the successful growth and execution of our SI portfolio. This position is located on Northeastern University’s Campus in Seattle, WA, with travel to other KRI sites as required for conduct of the role (< 25% travel). The position is with the Kostas Research Institute of Northeastern University and will report to the CTO of KRI.

One position will be based on the Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA and the second position will be based at the Roux-Kostas Advanced Manufacturing Center in Brunswick, ME. The Research Engineer, Additive & Advanced Mfg. (RE, AAM) is charged with (1) the development of our collaborative program in the creation of differentiated capabilities in additive and advanced manufacturing that generate structures and materials with unique/superior performance, (2) the evaluation and characterization of these structures, materials, and practices (including the assessment of means to cyber-protect these methods from hostile observation/interference), and (3) the development of best practices and materials for the deployment of these methods as well as the effective training of users. The RE, AAM shall provide an energetic vision for the growth and development of our AAM program via an assessment of the current state of technology, feedback from our corporate and government partners, and an ongoing discussion with our faculty. The RE, AAM shall serve as the project coordinator and portfolio developer for all of these methods, including the oversight of the KRI Maker Space in Burlington, MA or the Roux-Kostas Advanced Manufacturing Center in Brunswick, ME. Additionally, he/she will serve as a technical coordinator for faculty and external (university, corporate, and govt) tech partners for the successful growth and execution of our AAM portfolio. This position is based in Burlington, MA or Brunswick, ME with travel to other KRI sites as required for conduct of the role. The position is with the Kostas Research Institute of Northeastern University and will report to the CTO of KRI and will have a dotted-line relationship with the Director of Engineering Research of the Roux Institute.
