About the Opportunity:

The Solid Waste Manager is responsible for the coordination and collection of solid waste and recyclables and the delivery of superior customer service to the University community, under the general direction of the Associate Director of Materials and Recycling.

Responsibilities:

Anticipate campus needs and plan accordingly to ensure that equipment, employee resources, contracted vendors and fiscal resources are utilized efficiently and effectively. Direct and supervise in-house staff in the daily handling and removal of solid waste and recyclable materials from all University buildings and at times in area neighborhoods. Manage contracted vendors providing solid waste/recycling services and monitor contract compliance. Follow established University rules and regulations as well as City of Boston requirements and ensure staff and contracted personnel do the same. Seek opportunities to become informed about industry best practices and innovative approaches for academic institutions, and assist in identifying opportunities to enhance the University’s recycling program.

Qualifications:

*Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of experience in waste management and/or customer service management in a technical field related to facilities operation, or Master’s degree with directly relevant experience and strong management skills.

*Understanding of regulatory compliance laws and guidelines.

*Strong leadership skills, including the ability to effectively direct staff and interact professionally with all levels of personnel.

*Superior interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to establish positive working relationships with supervised staff, management personnel, other University staff across all levels and disciplines, contracted vendors, and other external parties.

*Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and achieve results in a self-directed manner.

*Understanding of the campus environment (Northeastern or comparable).

*Must have a valid Massachusetts driving license with proven history of operating trucks.

*Must have a valid DOT certificate.

*Position requires a criminal background check.

Additional Information:

*Salaried/Professional position. Requires on-call availability seven days a week (24/7) to manage unexpected staffing changes, provide remote guidance to staff as needed, and address critical issues that may arise from time-to-time. The Solid Waste Manager position is considered Essential Personnel. The Solid Waste Manager is generally expected to work a schedule that closely matches or provides significant overlap with the typical work day of the solid waste/recycling materials handlers, which is 6:00 am to 2:30 PM.
