Department

The Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) within the Division of Student Affairs strives to increase access and retention for students with permanent and temporary disabilities by ensuring equitable treatment in all aspects of campus life. The program acts as a catalyst and agent for compliance with Federal and State laws and regulations mandating equal opportunity and access for person with disabilities. Our office provides co-curricular and academically related services which empower students with disabilities to achieve academic and personal self-determination. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Coordinator (Student Services Professional II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Operations in Disability Support Services (DSS), the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Coordinator coordinates communication access, accommodations, and support services for CSUF students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and have a qualified disability. This position serves as the primary point of contact for prospective, newly admitted, and continuing students, providing guidance on accommodation processes and facilitating access to academic programs, services, and campus activities. The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Coordinator advises students regarding classroom accommodations related to service providers and communication access technology and consults with faculty to coordinate the placement of service providers and ensure course materials and media are accessible, including captioned content. The position collaborates with campus partners to facilitate outreach efforts, support disability awareness initiatives, and coordinate DSS-sponsored events. In addition, the role coordinates furniture accommodations to support access needs. Responsibilities are focused on coordination, consultation, and service facilitation in alignment with approved accommodations and institutional guidelines. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.  

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to interact effectively and diplomatically with a student population, faculty, staff, service providers, vendors, and members of the public. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of campus and external partners. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and professionally in person and through written correspondence and email. Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of campus policies, procedures, resources, activities, and the overall organization. Working knowledge and understanding of California State University (CSU) policies, guidelines, practices, and procedures related to disability services and accessibility. Previous professional experience working with students with disabilities, preferably within a higher education or student services environment. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture and the experiences and access needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) individuals. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), with the ability to communicate effectively with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and community members.

Working knowledge of applicable disability and accessibility laws and regulations, including Sections 503, 504, and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Knowledge of services, technologies, equipment, and communication access resources commonly used by Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, including interpreting and captioning services. Ability to use personal computers (PC and Mac), adaptive technologies, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other technology necessary to coordinate services and maintain records.

Ability to plan, coordinate, organize, and monitor DHH services and related activities. Ability to maintain highly organized and accurate records, manage competing priorities, and coordinate multiple service requests and deadlines. Ability to analyze complex situations, identify service needs or concerns, and determine appropriate courses of action. Ability to advise and assist students individually on complex disability- and access-related matters and to complete assignments with limited supervision.

This report contains the current security and safety-related policy statements, emergency preparedness and evacuation information, crime prevention and sexual assault prevention information, and drug and alcohol prevention programming. The ASR also contains statistics of Clery Act crimes for California State University, Fullerton for the last three (3) calendar years. Paper copies are available upon request at the CSUF Police Department.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR)
In addition, pursuant to the Higher Education Opportunity Act, the Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR) is also available for viewing. The purpose of this report is to disclose statistics for fires that occurred within California State University, Fullerton housing facilities for the last three (3) calendar years, and to distribute fire safety policies and procedures intended to promote safety on campus.
