Who we are:

Mindgardens Neuroscience Network (Mindgardens) is an alliance between South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD), Neuroscience Research Australia, UNSW Sydney and the Black Dog Institute. The Mindgardens Tertiary Referral Service for Psychosis (TRSP) offers intensive and individualised therapeutic approaches for people who live with complex psychotic disorders. TRSP operates within SESLHD and extends to greater NSW using state-of the art telehealth facilities. This established service focuses on excellence in multidisciplinary assessment and treatment planning and implementation, using measurement-based care and deliberate practice. The service is underpinned by collaborative research opportunities with Mindgardens and external partners and clinical governance is managed by the Eastern Suburbs Mental Health Service facility within SESLHD.

Typically, individuals with complex or difficult to treat psychotic illness have already tried multiple services, often over many years, without finding support that is truly helpful to them. The TRSP aims to integrate multiple therapeutic approaches – including medication, psychological support and physical health care – while carefully monitoring in real time how people respond to the components of their care. This will create a feedback loop in which the treatment elements that are most valuable for an individual can be maintained or increased, while those that are not working or carry unacceptable side-effects can be tailed off or stopped. Every patient’s treatment regime and responses to it is comprehensively recorded, creating a unique trove of highly detailed data that researchers can mine to find new patterns, and more confidently make treatment recommendations for future patients.

Why this role matters

The Senior Project Officer will oversee and co-ordinate research activities within the TRSP program and support other research projects within Mindgardens. This role will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers that specialise in complex psychotic illness. The position will provide technical and research assistance to senior research staff in activities associated with various Mindgardens research projects. This will include the management of databases to support routine data collection, and applying specialist knowledge in the conduct of research to a range of projects conducted within the TRSP and Mindgardens.

Some key skills required:

  • Postgraduate qualification in relevant field (eg science, allied health, statistics) or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training or experience.
  • High level skills in research, data analysis and data visualisation. Experience in research involving individuals with mental illness and/or their carers, will be highly regarded.
  • Proven project management experience, capacity to establish and meet deadlines.
  • Proven initiative, analytical and problem-solving skills, and close attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills including the ability to contribute to research outputs and reports for diverse audiences
  • Experience in preparing research data for submission to academic journals.
  • Proven high level organisational skills including ability to co-ordinate meetings between multiple stakeholders, ability to prioritise own workload and work independently, attention to detail in record-keeping, experience with managing and coordinating research projects in a timely manner.
  • Excellent computing skills and demonstrated knowledge of statistical and database software, such as SPSS, SAS, R, STATA, etc.
  • High level interpersonal and negotiation skills including ability to liaise effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders.
