Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Collections, Systems, and Services, the Resource Sharing Specialist manages all operations associated with the Library’s resource sharing programs. Searches for and borrows a wide variety of materials requested by Occidental College faculty members, students, and staff. Uses Alma, ILLiad, OCLC, and other specialized search platforms to locate items in a variety of languages and formats. Recruits, trains, and supervises student assistants to page and lend materials to other institutions. Participates in other Library activities as needed, including collections management and public services.

This position is represented for purposes of collective bargaining by SEIU.

 

Job Duties

  • 25% - Locates requested materials for borrowing; identifies appropriate, cost-effective lenders; receives materials using Alma, ILLiad, and OCLC and ensures timely returns. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Manages the Library’s reciprocal lending program; assists in establishing and maintaining reciprocal lending and borrowing agreements; serves as the primary contact for consortial borrowing systems, such as Rapid-ILL and Rapido. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Performs complex bibliographic searching; interprets bibliographic citations; communicates with vendors; verifies invoices and ensures payments; monitors copyright compliance needs; maintains, gathers, and submits statistics to the Copyright Clearance Center; and compiles and reports resource-sharing statistics for assessment and evaluation. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Interacts closely with faculty, students, and staff by providing resources and services, answering inquiries, and resolving problems. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Hires, schedules, trains, supervises, and manages student assistants. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Engages in other closely associated activities when needed, including shipping logistics and auxiliary digitization services. - (Essential)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in fields related to position responsibilities.
  • One year of academic library employment or its equivalent in education and/or training.
  • Demonstrated support for the values of a residential liberal arts education and determination to strengthen the academic community by providing equitable access to scholarly information resources designed to advance teaching, learning, and research.
  • Creative and inquisitive online searching skills.
  • Working knowledge of discovery and resource-sharing systems, such as Alma, ILLiad, and OCLC. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies. Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, inclusion & diversity.
  • Demonstrated skill in adapting to and performing work effectively in high-volume, high accountability, confidential environment with multiple and changing priorities.
  • Effective organizational, logistical, time management and planning skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks/projects simultaneously, prioritize and fulfill the functions of an office in a timely manner.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $23.00/hr - $24.00/hr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.  We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
