Summary of Position: The Preparator will work alongside the Exhibitions Director to produce high-quality exhibitions. The Preparator assists the curatorial team in planning, preparation, security, installation and de-installation of gallery exhibitions and other display materials. This is a part-time position to work a maximum of 28 hours per week. Daily/weekly schedule will be determined based on KCAD Gallery’s need and may include evenings and/or weekends as needed.

Required Education: High school diploma or GED equivalency.  
Required Work Experience: At least 2 years of progressively responsible experience in art handling, gallery, or museum work with an emphasis on exhibition preparation/installation strongly preferred.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: BFA in Art, Art History, Museum Studies or related field.
Scissor Lift Certification.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Coordinate, oversee, and execute logistics of all exhibition installations and deinstallations working alongside the Exhibitions Director.
Track supplies and resource needs and determines adjustments in stock quantities as required.
Train, monitor, manage, schedule, and work alongside on-call preparators and student preparators.
Condition all incoming and outgoing artworks to ensure that works are documented and that no damages occurred during it’s loan period.
Monitor the condition and appearance of exhibitions, identify problem areas and recommend solutions, oversee the necessary repair/maintenance or coordinate work with other departments as required.
Oversee the maintenance and repair of gallery spaces, tools, equipment, and supplies.
Insure adherence to safe workplace practices and procedures in the handling of art and in all preparation work and workshop spaces.
Coordinate and execute the packing, labeling, shipping, and local transport of art and exhibitions.
Coordinate and manufacture exhibition-related signage and labels.
Fabricate, plan, and purchase materials for exhibition assets/display purposes.
Monitor environmental needs in gallery space.
Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
 
Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: Assist in the development of exhibition and special project budgets.
Assist the curatorial team with exhibition programming, design, layout, and curation.
Create interactive elements for educational programming that complements exhibition programming .
Assist University with manufacturing and hanging KCAD signage.
Schedules student workers and on-call preparators.
 
Skills and Abilities: Ability to plan, prioritize and simultaneously oversee multiple projects.
Knowledge of various AV set ups.
Must be willing and able to rearrange work schedule including weekends if necessary to accommodate deadlines and priorities.
Familiarity with safe working practices, including OSHA.
Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity and inclusion.
